HPV is an unenveloped virus (human papillomavirus) composed of approximately 8000 base pairs of double-stranded circular DNA and icosahedral stereo symmetric protein capsid, belonging to the polyomavirus subfamily of lactoviridae. 

HPV infects human epidermis and mucosal epithelial cells and can cause a variety of benign and malignant tumors. Cervical cancer is the first cancer to be identified with a single, well-defined cause, HPV infection. While HPV infection is common, cervical cancer is relatively rare. Almost all patients with cervical cancer have HPV infection, but usually most HPV infections do not cause any disease, and most HPV infections do not have cytological abnormalities.

HPV examination is mainly to collect the cervical vagina and cervical mouth of the shed cell samples, using PCR standard detection method to determine the presence and load of HPV. 

At present, most medical experts, scholars think: HPV detection + cervical cytology screening is the best program of cervical cancer screening.
